Where's the Dust Pan?
KC and I watched most of the game from O'Neil's, an Irish Pub here in Shalom. Since sweeping starts with a broom and brooms are big here, I'm thinking of using Samantha as the official symbol of Red Sox sweeps:

Clutch hitting was in effect. (I'm 33 years old and I still get confused between effect and affect.) And our pitching (and managing, thanks, Terry) was really great this evening. I loved the ole "one batter and you're beat" ballsy move executed by our skipper tonight. I'm speaking of Myers, who was less than pleased to leave the mound. Stolen bases. Good base running. Everything just sort of came together. I think the biggest thanks of all ought to be extended to fatty Wickman who helped us come out on top. Sweaty. Nervous. Off his game. It's fun to watch those kind late innings, even when you are chewing on bloody stumps.

1 game from 1st place. Striking distance, to be sure. We face Lieber in Philly next. It's all about revenge this year. I hope we smoke him.

Good idea, about the broom.

You have both an affect and an effect.

Game was on ESPN here. Your comments about the game were right on. I understand all three games this weekend are already sold out.

Nothing like losing on a balk with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth because a walk, a double and a long fly from the first three batters of the eighth are worth nothing. (Hint: think caught stealing and leading the majors in leaving runners on in scoring position.)

20th time this year already the Sox have come from behind to win. And to not have lost after leading after the eighth despite Foulke and to not have had an extra-inning game...very impressive.

That is a very disappointing way to lose. Not that losing isn't inherently disappointing, but you catch my drift. There's no excuse for balking. In addition to advancing the opposition's basemen, it says to the next batter: I'm choking at the moment. Chances are I will walk you, as I'm pretty much on the losing side of this mind game. Brace yourself for a wild pitch.

I thought we might end up in extra innings last night. Instead, we held 'em and won the game.

I think I could get used to seeing her up there... now if only we can get our guys to cooperate.

funny, when I calculated my BpB stats from last night, they all got the same score : 2/5, or 10/25, in Miller's case. Except for Myers, whose sample was rather small. By the way, my eyes are starting to feel funny from staring at box scores. I can't believe I'm doing this.

I will be posting something about Lieber today. And boy do I want revenge.

I look forward to the Lieber post, even though I know that there will be straining and possible throbbing headaches first. We need to get you some software for this.

Effect vs. Affect

Effect is used in the "cause and effect" stance. the effect is a result of something else. The win last night was greatly due to the effective clutch hitting.

Affect has more to do with feeling - you are affected by the results. The Red Sox won, which affects you in a way that makes you feel elated. It affected my heart strings to watch Payton make it to third base.

thanks again for the beers and good conversation - always a blast! :)

He's a big Red Sox fan, but he is not related to the duck, or to JLo.

Thank you for clarifying this for me. I can pretty much guarantee, though, that I will forget after today. I'm awful like that. At least I know where to go if I get stuck again.

Too bad Payton is probably going to get traded soon. I just freaking love that guy. I wonder if we are going to stay with the Youk and Olerud. Like, are we getting another utility person? Probably easier to call someone up.

We'll have to do O'Neil's again. 'Twas fun.
